The long time resident of Rome, Georgia was born out
of the union of the late Linton and Addie Lee Hamilton Spivey on
June 28, 1934. He was married for 43 years to the late Lucille Dean
Spivey and is the proud father of 4 children. Dr. Spivey
accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in April 1959 and was
saved under the late Superintendent Simon Shuman. He received his
call to the gospel ministry in June 1962 and esteems it an honor to
have been ordained as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ by the
late Bishop O.T. Jones, Sr. (during his tenure as Second Senior
Bishop C.O.G.I.C.) in August 1963. Dr. Spivey was appointed to the
pastorate of Prince of Peace Church of God in Christ in 1983 and
Commenced pastoring at his current church, Glad Tidings Church of
God in Christ, Cedartown, Georgia, in 1979.
His storied life presents a man of God, full of
wisdom, a visionary, the epitome of a servant. Dr. Spivey
exemplifies a Christ like attitude as he reaches out to assist
others. With dedication, resolve and fervor, he demonstrated a
spirit of servitude as he progressed in the Lord at all levels of
the Church. In the local Church he served diligently in the Usher
Board, and the Junior and Senior Deacon Board. His leadership
ability and faithfulness was apparent and recognized by is bishop
who appointed him to a significant position in the Marietta District
as Chairman of both Atlanta and Marietta Districts where he lead by
example for more than twenty-five years. His dedicated service and
commitment in the Central Georgia Jurisdiction dates back to include
over forty years of service in numerous capacities, as follows:
Jurisdiction Auditor, Vice Chairman of the Elder' Council, Vice
Chairman of the State Steering Committee, Chairman of the Ordination
Board for twenty years, Administrative Assistant to the
Jurisdictional Prelate and Chairman of the State Consecration
Committee. As God would have it, he wholeheartedly worked with pride
in the National Church as National Adjutant (past member), Financial
Secretary for UNAC (national church summer conference), Treasurer
for the International Sunday School Department for nine years and
past member of the National Constitution Committee.
Civic and Community Affiliations-- Past and Current,
include: Assistant Committee Chairman, Boy Scouts of America,
Tallatoona Area (past member), Floyd county Community Action Group
(past member), Floyd County Merit Board (past member), Cedartown
Ministries Alliance (past president and past treasurer). He was
recently honored with the 2005 Polk County Meritorious Service Award
for outstanding service. In addition, his church stands out as a
beacon in the community as it is known to be a church caring for the
needs of the less fortunate.
Dr. Spivey is a strong advocate of education and as
such, invested many years in preparation for his business accounting
and professional career, but most importantly and foremost, for the
gospel ministry. He received his formative education at Cherokee
County School, Cedar Bluff, Alabama, on May 23, 1953. Continuing to
pursue his education, he matriculated at Main School of Business.
1961-64; Coosa Valley Technical College, 1969-70; and Floyd Junior
College, 1976-79. He earned degrees as follows: 1983- Bachelor of
Business Administration, Southwestern University; 1987-Master of
Divinity, Mason Seminary and in 1994 his Doctor of Ministry in
pastoral Care and Counseling at Mason Seminary.
Dr. Spivey's personal successes and achievements
have been manifested as blessings that brought to the forefront his
purpose and calling to the gospel ministry. Through it all, he is
humbled and serves with a grateful heart as an anointed disciple of
Jesus Christ, knowing that promotion comes from God. To God Be the
glory.
In 2003, the Western Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of
Georgia was established, and on April 1, 2005, Dr. Spivey was
consecrated to the Bishopric and installed as the Jurisdictional
Prelate by Bishop Gilbert E. Patterson, then Presiding Bishop of the
Church of God in Christ, Inc.
